Betis ruins Ronaldo's return

Antonio Sanabria celebrates after his last-gasp victor for Real Betis.

The absence of Cristiano Ronaldo through suspension for the club's first four league games made matters hard but even the Portugal global couldn't prevent Zinedine Zidane's from slipping to defeat against Real Betis.

Ronaldo saw a goalbound effort scrambled away early on and was one of 12 shots the Portuguese had on goal including one chance nine times out of 10 he would have stuck away.

Ronaldo feels Mayoral interrupts his style of play, while wanting to hog the middle of the pitch to ensure he gets as close as possible to Lionel Messi's goal tally.

Betis keeper Antonio Adan, who began his career at Real Madrid, made countless saves, keeping out Borja Mayoral's effort on 90 minutes before Sanabria's injury time victor.

"Remember we scored three at San Sebastian [against Real Sociedad] just three days before Betis".

There is great expectation in the Montilivi Stadium, but after three games in which they have failed to score, Girona will need to do something special to stop Barcelona maintaining their 100 per cent record at the start of the campaign.

The loss last night put Real seven points behind Barcelona with just five games gone.

If I was seven ahead I wouldn't say the league is over, so we are not going to give up.

However, with Ronaldo's return came yet more bad news for Zidane when Toni Kroos was ruled out of Saturday's trip to Alaves after a rib injury forced the German worldwide to miss training on Friday. "We have the chance to be able to change that quickly and we'll do it".

That was exactly what they did right up until the game went into stoppage time.

"We have a game on Saturday, a game in the Champions League, then another game [against Espanyol on October 1]".

"Perhaps it is a bad moment for us, but - apart from the game against Levante - I am happy with the way we have been playing. Now I'm thinking about tomorrow's game to try and do better and try to win". "We have a match in which to prove ourselves and I have a match to show that I'm worthy of being in this job".

"But tomorrow we are up against each other and I'm on the Madrid side, he's on the side of Alaves". They didn't even play badly, but as Sergio Ramos said: "Last year we won some games we didn't deserve to and this year it looks like the opposite but we can't go mad about it".
