Emmys sends #DCPublicSchools to head of the class

"What if y'all supported #DCPublicSchools students & teachers w/ funding & support and not just hashtagged tweets cuz @iamjohnoliver asked", one user wrote.

During the Emmys on Sunday night, Chapelle - an Emmy victor for guest-hosting SNL this year - joked that he missed rehearsals and was just going to read the teleprompter without prior preparation.

"Please forgive me", Chapelle said.

Oliver was referencing a moment from earlier in the evening, when Dave Chappelle, who grew up in Washington, DC, randomly quipped, "Shout-out to DC Public Schools", while presenting the Outstanding Directing in a Comedy Series Emmy alongside Melissa McCarthy. "So, if you're tweeting about the Emmys at home, please use the hashtag D.C. Public Schools", Oliver said.

And even though Sunday isn't a school day, someone from the DC Public Schools social media team was smart enough to respond.

"Like Dave Chappelle, I would like to unexpectedly thank D.C. public schools because - I think it would be great to get it started trending on Twitter for no reason tonight whatsoever", Oliver said.

The late-night host took to the stage and thanked HBO, before jokingly putting the spotlight on Oprah, who was seated in the front row of the audience for the night.
