McDermott recalls knowledge of Panthers ahead of Sunday game

Buffalo will chalk this one up to a moral victory, not that it counts for much of anything.

Rookie head coach Sean McDermott established in Buffalo's season-opening win over the New York Jets that he has no intention of veering from his long-established approach of rotating his defensive front to keep it fresh throughout the game.

Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton (1) and defensive coordinator Sean McDermott (left) competed with each other in practice when McDermott was with the Panthers. However, he was sure to note that he is "very confident" McCoy will play against the Carolina Panthers on Sunday without limitations.

After easing him back a week ago, look for the Panthers to cut Newton loose a bit and work on a suspect Bills back line. Tolbert, a popular player when he was in Charlotte, had 12 carries and scored on a 1-yard TD run in his first game in Buffalo. White had a very nice debut last week, but it would have been hard for him not to against the Jets' weak receivers. Granted, we are only able to watch the individual portion of practice, but it appears that the Bills are either content with Jordan Mills as the starting right tackle, or just want Dawkins fully prepared to take over for Glenn if need be in the event that his ankle acts up again. White is 5-foot-11 and 192 pounds, while Benjamin is 6-5, 245. The associated moneylines in the game are Carolina -320 and Buffalo +260. Beane knows nearly all the players from his time in the Carolina front office. "He's a guy that can sit in the pocket, he's looking to make the throw but he can extend the play, and also he has the ability to run the football", says Panther safety Kurt Coleman. According to the coach, salary is not factored into how often a player is on the field. The second-round draftee didn't have a reception in the opener. Not many people around here think that McCaffrey will have a ceiling as to what he can do in the NFL.

With McDermott running the show, you would expect the Bills defense to be top notch.

Buffalo might have had an easier time of it, but tight end Charles Clay botched a touchdown catch and kicker Steven Hauschka missed a 46-yard field goal. He totaled 14 tackles and an INT in the last meeting.

McDermott says he is familiar with the strengths and weaknesses of the Panthers.

In his first five seasons, Kuechly has amassed 692 tackles, nine sacks and 13 interceptions, the most of any linebacker since he joined the league in 2012. First-year Bills general manager Brandon Beane spent 19 years in the Carolina organization, including the past two as assistant general manager.
