Sabrina-Centric Riverdale Spinoff in Development at The CW

Sabrina-Centric Riverdale Spinoff in Development at The CW

Riverdale Season 2 premieres Wednesday, Oct. 11 at 8/7c on The CW.

One of Archie Comics' most popular characters, Sabrina the Teenage Witch, has been conspicuously missing from the CW's Archie-themed drama series Riverdale. It will be written and executive produced by Riverdale creator Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and be a companion series to Aguirre-Sacasa's hit teenage murder mystery.

The TV drama will find young Sabrina trying to reconcile her dual nature - she's half-witch, half-mortal - while standing against the evil forces that threaten her, her family and the daylight world humans inhabit.

The CW is developing a Sabrina series called The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, TV Guide has learned. The comic is set in the 1960s, but there's no indication in the announcement whether the adaptation will be a period piece. That may also happen with Sabrina on the upcoming second season on Riverdale though that is still TBD. We even thought Sabrina was going to appear in the Season 1 finale, but were sorely disappointed. Of course, Melissa Joan Hart starred in a Sabrina TV series during the late '90s/early '00s, but given the genre influences on Riverdale, fans have hoped for a similar spin on Sabrina the Teenage Witch.

An animated revival, described as "Twilight meets Buffy the Vampire Slayer, " was announced in 2011, with plans surfacing the following year for a live-action movie.

The title's success lead to Sabrina starring in her own comic "The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina", a not-quite-spinoff that takes place in a different reality.

Aguirre-Sacasa executive produces the project with Krieger, Berlanti Prods.' Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter as well as Jon Goldwater.
