Sean Penn launches into television with Hulu's space drama 'The First'

While he's also appeared on various shows, like Friends and Two and a Half Men, The First will be the actor's first recurring leading role on a series.

The "Milk" and "Mystic River" Oscar victor will star in Hulu's upcoming space drama "The First" from "House of Cards" creator Beau Willimon, the streaming service announced Wednesday. He is to headline Hulu's The First, a project given a straight-to-series order by the streaming outlet back in May, which will manifest with a space exploration-themed story set in a near-future, following humanity's first mission to colonize Mars.

Series creator Willimon will executive-produce the drama with Jordan Tappis.

The show, which will air on Channel 4 in the United Kingdom and Ireland as well, is to go into production this year and is scheduled to debut in 2018. "I feel very lucky to be collaborating with an artist of his caliber". He most recently lent his voice for an episode of Fox's Family Guy. Senior vp content Craig Erwich and vp content development Beatrice Springborn developed the series for Hulu. Penn, who remains attached to star and exec produce HBO's Andrew Jackson mini American Lion, is repped by CAA and Hirsch Wallerstein.

The First is one of several high-profile upcoming series for Hulu, which is riding high on the Emmy success of The Handmaid's Tale.

Penn has won two Oscars for lead performances, for "Mystic River" in 2003 and "Milk" in 2008, along with three other Oscar nominations.
