Trump wants lawmakers to move fast on taxes

Attendants at the meeting, which included Ryan and Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), refused to discuss its content, but said it was "good" and "productive".

"Probably not that specificity", House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Kevin Brady said at a policy forum when asked if the plan due for release on September 25 would include target tax rates for individuals and USA corporations.

White House Budget director Mick Mulvaney said he thinks Democrats are interested in working together on a tax overhaul.

Ryan says the GOP wants to enact a tax cut into law by the end of this year, not simply to push a bill through the House.

"He was very clear, up front on that", Manchin said.

Increasing America's global competitiveness in corporate tax rates also was discussed. The global average is 22 percent to 23 percent, he said.

Mr. Trump has been pushing for changes to the tax code to cut corporate and individual rates and simplify the system, but has offered few specifics. He likened it to when West Virginia privatized workers' compensation and planners underestimated revenue projections. "The question is will they have the political courage to look at the principles and the substance of the proposal and I hope they will", he said.

Senators Joe Manchin of West Virginia, Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota and Joe Donnelly of IN joined Republican senators Orrin Hatch of Utah, John Thune of South Dakota, and Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania for the meal.

Manchin said, from his perceptions, the president in private isn't the same as his public persona.

House Speaker Paul Ryan and other power centers in Congress have begun assembling groups to work on immigration as Washington continues to race the clock ahead of a March deadline to save the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program.

Manchin said his perceptions were based on speaking and listening to the president at the dinner.

Ryan called the meeting at the behest of Democrats, after Trump canceled DACA, a program that now protects 690,000 Dreamers from deportation. The deal angered Republicans.

HORSLEY: Trump repeated that claim this afternoon even though the tax plan he floated during the campaign delivered most of its savings to people at the top of the income ladder while adding trillions to the federal debt.

"That's my gut" reaction, Manchin said.
