U2 cancels concert due to lack of police protection

Noisy demonstrators disrupted shopping at suburban malls and marched through a district of bars and restaurants on Saturday, but the protests were peaceful following sporadic vandalism and violence a night earlier.

Another Saturday cancellation was Shakespeare in the Streets in front of the downtown St. Louis Public Library. She said she was protesting because doing nothing makes someone complicit in the brutalization of others.

The band said they regretted the decision, but could not risk the safety of their fans. The canceled St. Louis concert was set to take place at The Dome at America's Center on Saturday night.

The St. Louis Symphony also canceled Friday and Saturday's long-sold-out performances of Harry Potter and the Chamber Of Secrets - In Concert, citing safety concerns.

Protests broke out in the city on Friday after a former St Louis police officer was acquitted from a first-degree murder charge after fatally shooting African-American driver Anthony Lamar Smith six years ago.

'We have been informed by the St. Louis Police Department that they are not in a position to provide the standard protection for our audience as would be expected for an event of this size.

With protests taxing local crowd security, the event was in competition for personnel to ensure the smooth handling of tens of thousands of concertgoers.

The Irish rock group announced the news with a statement shared on Twitter, on behalf of themselves and concert promoter Live Nation. "We can not in conscience risk the safety of our fans, and now the concert this evening", they write.

Fans who purchased tickets online will receive a refund on the credit card tickets were ordered on. Fans that purchased tickets at the Scottrade Center Box Office may come to the box office beginning Monday, Sept. 18 at 10 be issued a refund.
