General manager John Lynch said he and coach Kyle Shanahan met with Bowman and it became clear that going in different directions was the best move for both sides.

"Although NaVorro may be moving on, he will always be looked at as one of the great players to wear the red and gold", Lynch said.

San Francisco is one of three winless teams (New York Giants and Cleveland Browns) remaining in the league, their last four losses coming by a combined 11 points.

Bowman could be an intriguing target for the Colts, especially considering he's spent his entire career playing the inside linebacker role in a 3-4 defense, the same type the Colts implement. The two were key to San Francisco's run of three straight trips to the NFC title game and one Super Bowl appearance.

Bowman leads the 49ers with 38 tackles this season in his return from an October 2016 Achilles' tear. He appeared in only four contests a year ago after tearing his Achilles tendon in early October. He has sustained two major injuries to his left leg since January of 2014. He ranks 47th among linebackers in tackling efficiency, according to Pro Football Focus. They did so at inside linebacker and the unit has struggled through five weeks into the season.

A four-time first-team All-Pro, Bowman recorded at least 143 tackles in each season from 2011-2015, and he also has seven forced fumbles and four interceptions in his career. Lynch and Shanahan called the report "completely false" in a joint statement issued to NBC Sports Bay Area.

The 49ers then drafted star linebacker Reuben Foster from Alabama in the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft. Foster even got reps during training camp at the position and was put in charge of calling out plays while there. Bowman at his best was a complete linebacker, but the player of 2015 was far more one-dimensional. In 2018, that number increases to almost $12 million.
