Airtel is however, upping the game by launching a 4G smartphone instead of just a 4G feature phone. Subtracting the cashback from the down payment for the phone gives the smartphone an "effective price" of the Rs. 1,399. You'd then have to make at least Rs 3000 worth of recharges for the first 18 months to receive a Rs 500 cashback, followed up by another Rs 3000 spread over 18 months to get Rs 1000 as cashback.

While the JioPhone has to be returned to get the Rs. 1,500 cashback, the Airtel 4G Phone users keep the device with them even after claiming the cashback amount. Airtel says that the smartphone, which normally costs at Rs 3,499 will be available "effectively at the price of a feature phone". It has got a 1400 mAh battery and runs on Android Nougat OS. The handset also supports dual SIM slots.

Coming with the 4G VoLTE connectivity, the Karbonn A40 Indian has a quad-core processor, possibly from MediaTek and along with that is 1GB of RAM and 8GB internal storage.

It has a built-in storage memory of 8 GB, which can be supplemented by a 32 GB micro-SD card. The first fruit of these partnerships is with Karbonn Mobiles, with the Karbonn A40 Indian said to now be available at an "effective price" of Rs. 1,399.

After buying the Karbonn A40 Indian, you have to use an Airtel SIM and recharge it with the Airtel Rs. 169 plan to avail the offer. However, the unlimited calling might not include calls made while in the roaming network. The company has not mentioned the kind of data and voice call benefits that users will get at Rs 169.

Indian telecom operator Bharti Airtel has selected Karbonn Mobiles to launch affordable 4G smartphone in India. "This is yet another step in our ongoing journey to deeply understand customers and bring innovation that delights them". The smartphone also supports Google Play Store and users can download different apps likes YouTube, WhatsApp, Facebook and much more.

The Karbonn A40 Indian also supports VoLTE, and, comes with features like Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and Global Positioning System.

But the cash refund benefit is contingent on consumer going in for recharges worth Rs 3,000 within the first 18 months (to claim the first refund instalment of Rs 500) and additional Rs 3,000 over the next 18 months (for second refund instalment of Rs 1000), it added.

"We are delighted to partner with Karbonn to remove barriers to smartphone adoption and enable millions of Indians to leapfrog to a full touchscreen smartphone experience", said Raj Pudipeddi, Director - Consumer Business & CMO, Bharti Airtel. The partnership between Airtel and Karbonn is part of Airtel's "Mera Pehla 4G Smartphone" initiative and the company has announced that it will partner with multiple mobile handset manufacturers to create an "open ecosystem" of affordable 4G smartphones.
