Collins Not Running for Governor, More To Be Done in Senate

U.S. Senator Susan Collins of ME, a moderate Republican who helped block her party's efforts to repeal Obamacare this year, said on Friday that she would not run for governor of her state next year, keeping her focus on Washington.

She is one of a handful of GOP centrists and decided she's needed in the U.S. Senate. Bob Corker (Tenn.) are heading for the exits. "And I have concluded that the best way that I can contribute to these priorities is to remain a member of the United States Senate", Collins said.

Collins made her announcement Friday, October 13 at the Penobscot Bay Regional Chamber of Commerce's quarterly business breakfast.

She read a note from a colleague - whom she did not name - who had told her "the institution would suffer in your absence". "There are very few who have the ability to bring about positive change, you are such a person".

"I am a congenital optimist, and I continue to believe that Congress can - and will - be more productive", she said. Since Mr. Trump became president, she has voted less often with her party than any other Republican senator.

The moderate Republican was first elected in 1996 and has played a pivotal role in the Senate in recent debates about health care policy.

She prefaced her morning remarks by commenting on the importance of bipartisanship, and national health care systems.

Her announcement Friday served as a reaffirmation of her desire to continue in that instrumental role, at a time when a growing number of Republicans worry about stopping Trump from making controversial decisions with far-reaching consequences.

Three Republican candidates are now in the race. Collins is not viewed as a certain supporter of the tax endeavor.

Her announcement ends widespread speculation that the 20-year veteran of the Senate would return to ME and seek to finish her political career in the governor's mansion - a position denied to her in 1994 when she finished third in a five-way race. Such hostility could have complicated run for governor.
