Election dates for Gujarat, Himachal Assemblies to be announced today

The Election Commission is set to announce elections to the Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh assemblies on Thursday evening. The three-member Election Commission headed by Chief Election Commissioner AK Jyoti will address a press conference where the full poll schedule for the two states will be released.

The Commission had indicated on Wednesday that Gujarat may go to polls in December as the term of the current legislative assembly is coming to end in the third week of January.

While the Congress has not named any leader as its chief ministerial candidate for Gujarat polls, it has announced incumbent Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh as the candidate for Himachal Pradesh.

Himachal's 68-member Assembly is ruled by the Congress which has 36 seats to BJP's 26.

This is Gujarat's fourteenth Assembly election to send 182 members to office. The BJP has 116 of 182 seats; chief Amit shah has declared "Mission 150", urging party workers to ensure that they "prove their gratitude to the Prime Minister" with an even bigger tally of seats. The Himachal Lokhit Party had won 1 seat while Independents bagged 5. The election is seen as crucial for the Congress, as the state is one of its few strongholds in the country. Gujarat will have 50,128 polling stations and 28,639 polling locations.

After the recently-held summary revision campaign in Gujarat, as many as 10.46 lakh new voters were added, out of which 3.20 lakh are first-time voters.

The Election Campaign is likely to announce the dates for the assembly elections in Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh by 4 pm today.
