Former Ballon d'Or victor, George Weah Wins Liberia Presidential Election'

The final results are due to be declared today by Liberia's National Elections Commission (NEC). In 2005 George Wea again ran for president, but then remained second in the vote, after Surley.

He is the only African player to win FIFA World Player of the Year and Ballon d'Or.

She led the country's recovery from a 14-year civil war and guided it through the Ebola crisis in 2014-15 that killed almost 5,000 Liberians.

Global observers said Tuesday's vote went smoothly despite late starts in some counties.


Voters commended her leadership but said they were ready for change. If there is a runoff election it will come two weeks after that announcement.

Liberia, Africa's oldest modern republic, was founded by freed USA slaves in 1847 but its last democratic power transfer dates back to 1943.

"All of these people are saying they want change and improvement, and that explains why nearly all of the candidates are presenting themselves as candidates for change", Fomunyoh said.

The retired proficient footballer turned politician who was a senator in his home country before his emergence as the successor of Ellen Johnson Sirleaf.
