Girard Ohio Police Officer Shot & Killed

Authorities say 31-year-old Girard police officer Justin Leo was shot just after 10 p.m. Saturday as he and another officer stood at front door of a home where the suspect opened fire.

Officer Leo was a 5 year veteran of the Girard Police Department. The suspect was then killed by the other officer in response. The man's identity hasn't been released.

The shooting of this police officer is affecting the entire city of Girard, even surrounding areas.

Leo and another officer were called to a house on Indiana Ave. for a domestic related incident. Police say they spoke briefly with the suspect as they approached the home.

An officer told a police dispatcher that a man who had been drinking all day had several weapons, according to a radio call for an "officer down".

Wayland said that although he's lived across the street for a while, he never met the suspect or encountered any problems.

Leo was taken to St. Elizabeth's Medical Center in Youngstown where he underwent surgery.

A vigil will be held in honor of Officer Leo on Sunday evening at 6:00 pm at Girard Stadium.

" An absolute gentleman and someone who the city has been proud of since he had been here with us", Girard Mayor Jim Melfi said, according to WFMJ.

The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is investigating the shooting. "Officer Justin Leo died protecting and serving his community".
