Japanese man arrested after parts of nine bodies found in home

Nine bodies, including two with their heads severed and dumped in a cool box, have been found by police in the suburbs of Tokyo. The suspect told police he dismembered the bodies in the bathroom after killing the persons.

A neighbour said to reporters: "There's been a nasty smell coming from that apartment".

"I killed them and did some work on the bodies in order to hide the evidence", NHK quoted him as saying.

Police made the grisly find in the apartment in Zama, a city just outside Tokyo, after investigating the disappearance of a 23-year-old woman who went missing earlier this month. The police plan to carry out DNA tests in an effort to identify the deceased, the investigators added.

The investigation of the woman's disappearance led police to a man thought to be in his twenties.

The 27-year-old is being held on suspicion of disposing of the bodies.

The woman was captured by a surveillance camera walking with the man in Zama near Sobudai-mae Station on the Odakyu Line, the police said.

The woman's brother, who had been unable to contact her since Oct 21, had discovered that she was in touch with the suspect after logging in to the website under her name and password. There is a day care located nearby.

A man who lives on the same floor told the Japan Times that he had noticed an "odd smell" when he walked past the apartment in August, describing it as "like sewage". "By no means did I think [it was due to corpses]".

Meanwhile, his next-door neighbour said he had started smelling unusual odours from the flat after Mr Shiraishi moved in in August, NHK and Asahi Shimbun said.
