Man Utd ready to hand Ander Herrera and Marouane Fellaini deal extensions

United are also trying to tie Fellaini to a new contract.

The midfielder joined United from Athletic Bilbao on a four-year deal in 2014.

With talks beginning last November, the club are well aware that Herrera will have the potential to talk with foreign suitors in January, which could lead to him leaving on a free transfer.

However, this option may not be necessary with Herrera after his representatives stated he is settled at the club and that they are "relaxed" about the current situation.

It means Nemanja Matic has been paired with Ander Herrera in the two holding midfield roles and they are set to stay there if neither Fellaini nor Pogba recover in time.

United are now second in the Premier League, two points behind early leaders Manchester City.

'We have been solid, not only in the Champions League, but during the whole season, ' said Herrera.

'We have nine points and are in the best position possible, so we are very happy.

"So if he was at that stage today, on Saturday I think he will be in a condition to play".

Manchester United return to Premier League action on Saturday afternoon with a trip to newly-promoted Huddersfield Town.

Centre-back Phil Jones was another to sit out the 1-0 win at Estadio da Luz but Mourinho is confident he will return on Saturday, with Eric Bailly unlikely to be ready.

Turkey defender Hasan Ali Kaldirim became the 10th player to pledge at least one per cent of his earnings to the charitable cause on Thursday, but the addition of two Premier League names is being seen as a significant breakthrough for the foundation after Sportsmail revealed that no Englishmen had signed up to it.
