Mukul Roy resigns as TMC MP, gives up Rajya Sabha membership

Mukul Roy on Wednesday submitted his resignation from Rajya Sabha as Trinamool Congress MP to Vice President and Rajya Sabha chairman Venkaiah Naidu.

Revealing that he was in touch with the senior leadership of all the parties, Roy said he would take a decision about his future endeavours after Diwali. He would meet the media later in the day to explain the reasons for leaving the party of which he was a founder-member.

As speculations are rife that the leader may look to join the Bharatiya Janata Party, Roy has also not made any comments to eliminate that as an option. Sometimes Trinamool Congress is with the BJP, sometimes they are with the Congress", adding that "We were very much a part of the NDA government once and joined hands with the BJP.

Talking to reporters later, Mukul Roy had said TMC would not have tasted success without the backing of the BJP at the national level in its initial years.

He had said, "With a heavy heart, I am announcing that I will quit as the primary party member of the Trinamool Congress". "The party [Trinamool] was formed to fight the Congress".

Roy, seen as the right-hand man of Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, quit the party and his Rajya Sabha seat today.

Roy met the BJP's West Bengal BJP in-charge Kailash Vijayvargiya at the residence of Rajya Sabha House Committee chairperson Om Mathur on Monday.

Roy met Finance Minister Arun Jaitley last week. And also TMC claimed him of socially mixing with the BJP.

Mukul Roy was earlier suspended from the party for "anti-party activities".
