Nanded Municipal Corporation Election Results 2017: Congress takes lead

Nanded Municipal Corporation Election Results 2017: Congress takes lead

The election was held on Wednesday and saw an aggressive campaign by both the BJP and the Shiv Sena.

The municipal corporation of Nanded has been ruled by the Congress, since it came into existence two decades ago.

Congress have taken the lead in Chavan's stronghold. Nanded Municipal Corporation has 3.96 lakh registered voters of whom 60 per cent turned out to vote on Wednesday.

The State Election Commission of Maharashtra had placed order for 400 VVPAT machines from the Electronic Corporation of India (ECI), but the company could not provide so many machines in time, so it was chose to use available 70 machines on pilot basis at a single ward in Nanded polls. The three-way battle pitched between the Bharatiya Janata Party, Congress and Shiv Sena has turned into a battle of pride for all three parties. Trends and results are expected to be available in few hours time.

The Shiv Sena leaders had ridiculed the BJP during the Bhandup by-election campaign.

Congress is in power in Nanded since its foundation.

The BJP, only two wards behind the Shiv Sena in Mumbai's Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), has narrowed the gap to just one seat by winning a by-election.

Out of 81 seats, 41 seats are reserved for women candidates, 15 seats for SC candidates, 2 for ST and 22 seats for Backward Class communities.

While Jagruti Patil polled 11,129 votes, her nearest rival, Shiv Sena candidate Minakshi Patil secured 6,337 votes in the by-election in ward no. 116 of the eastern suburb of Bhandup, BMC officials declared.

The Nanded civic body polls is viewed as a litmus test for former chief minister and current state Congress unit president Ashok Chavan, whose father late Shankarrao Chavan, a former defence minister, had nurtured the constituency over years.

The Congress, with 41 members, controls the outgoing civic body.
