Petty, with and without the Heartbreakers, continued to record new music and perform his hits; he also reunited with his pre-Heartbreakers group Mudcrutch for two albums.

The Los Angeles Police Department says it can not confirm rocker Tom Petty's death, despite reports from CBS News and other news sources.

Reports that Tom Petty had died at the age of 66 have been refuted following the rocker's heart attack earlier today.

Born in Florida on 20 October 1950, Petty got an global audience when his band the Heartbreakers made it big with their 1979 album Damn The Torpedoes.

The October break that the band is now on was a scheduled break and is not related to the summer's illness. They've since retracted their report, after the LAPD said they could not confirm the singer's death.

(2/2) However, the LAPD has no investigative role in this matter. Petty was also part of the supergroup The Traveling Wilburys along with Bob Dylan, Jeff Lynne, George Harrison and Roy Orbison.
