Ronaldo favourite to retain Ballon d'Or

The full list of top footballers was revealed across Monday by organisers France Football, with Champions League and La Liga winners Real Madrid dominating with seven nominees.

The Portugal superstar lifted his fourth Ballon d'Or a year ago and another win would bring him level with Barcelona legend Messi.

Manchester City playmaker Kevin De Bruyne, Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea and Roma forward Edin Dzeko make up the rest of the group to be announced in France Football's third quintet.

It was 2006 the last time neither Ronaldo nor Messi were named in the top three. Ligue 1 leaders Paris Saint-Germain also saw their attacking trio of Neymar, Edinson Cavani and Kylian Mbappe among the nominees.

Following unprecedented back-to-back Champions League wins, Real Madrid star Ronaldo is joined on the roster by attackers Karim Benzema and Isco, defenders Sergio Ramos and Marcelo, and midfielders Toni Kroos and Luka Modric.

Senegalese worldwide Sadio Mane, Tottenham striker Harry Kane and Atletico Madrid winger Antoine Griezmann have been include in the nominees for the 2017 Ballon d'Or award.

Widely considered the most prestigious annual award in football, and Real Madrid forward Ronaldo is expected to grab his fifth "Golden Ball" which will put him level with arch-rival Lionel Messi.

France leads all countries with four players, ahead of Belgium, Brazil, and Spain with three each.
