The League of Nations: Ukraine starts in division B

The Republic of Ireland have been been placed in League B for the inaugural UEFA Nations League, writes Stephen Barry.

The four bottom teams in their respective groups will be relegated to League B for the 2020 edition.

Austria, Russia, Slovakia, Sweden, Ukraine, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Denmark, Czech Republic and Turkey complete the 12 teams.

The competition, which UEFA says will replace most global friendlies, will be played in September, October and November 2018, with a group stage draw scheduled for next January. The national teams of Ukraine and Russian Federation will be divided into different groups.

England will be in Pot 2 for the group stage draw of the 2018 UEFA Nations League draw, which takes place on January 24.

The competition which will effectively replace friendlies will run from September to November 2018.

That means missing out on the potential for games against Germany, Italy, Spain and England, who are among the dozen teams to qualify for League A. A host country will be appointed in December 2018 from the finalist teams.

If the winners of a Nations League group have already qualified for Euro 2020 via the qualifying groups, their place in the play-off will go to the next best team in their Nations League group that has not secured a place.

According to the results of the League of Nations will determine the four participants of the final stage of Euro 2020 among those teams that failed to qualify for the European championship through traditional qualifications.

Teams will be split into one group of three and three groups of four.

The four bottom teams in their respective groups will be relegated to League B for the 2020 edition. The four group winners will be promoted to League C for the 2020 edition.

UEFA has introduced the competition to revive global football with more competitive matches and to give nations more chances to play against teams of a comparable standard. The draw for those play-offs will take place in November 2019 and the play-offs themselves will occur in March 2020.
