"It's been a long wait for everyone, it hasn't been easy", Sharapova said of the rain-delayed tournament.

A couple of out-wide aces and a massive backhand victor, Sharapova sealed the first set 6-3.

"The good thing about this tournament is it has indoors, it's pretty state-of-the-art, and I trained at the National Tennis Centre as well, which was very impressive".

Italian Sara Errani downed Beatriz Haddad Maia of Brazil 6-4 4-6 6-3, while American Christina McHale accounted for Maria Sakkari of Greece 6-0 6-4.

Fifth seed Sorana Cirstea defeated Natalia Vikhlyantseva, 7-6 (14), 6-4, to make it to the quarterfinals of the Upper Austria Ladies' Linz for the first time in six years.

In the semifinals, Sharapova will face either Spain's Sara Sorribes Tormo or China's Peng Shuai.

The Pole had made it to the second round of the Tianjin Open following a victory over Ukraine's Kateryna Bondarenko.
