Trump Selects White House Aide for Homeland Security Chief

"There will be no on-the-job training for Kirstjen", Trump said.

After Trump's remarks, Nielsen said it was a privilege to have worked at the White House and DHS, and she implied that she shares the administration's priorities when it comes to national security.

Nielsen was former DHS Secretary John Kelly's deputy when he served in that role and moved with Kelly to the White House when he was tapped to be Trump's chief of staff. She is the premiere candidate for the homeland security post who had benefited in the department according to the statement.

On Wednesday, she greeted Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his wife Sophie Grégoire Trudeau to the White House in a jaw-dropping grey pinstripe pantsuit outfit. As a young attorney, she drafted legislation and policy at the Transportation Security Administration, then served as a special adviser for emergency preparedness and disaster management under President George W. Bush. "She will be ready on day one", Trump said during a formal ceremony in the White House's East Room.

Kirstjen Nielsen was the choice of White House Chief of Staff John Kelly.

If confirmed by the Senate, Nielsen will lead an agency charged with securing the nation's borders and airports, enforcing immigration laws, coordinating disaster relief efforts and overseeing the Secret Service and Coast Guard. That includes restricting access to the Oval Office and streamlining the flow of information to the president.

One former Bush administration official expressed concern over her selection, describing Nielsen as less qualified than Elaine Duke, who is now leading the department in an acting capacity. That might have contributed to Trump thinking about her highly.

Duke received praise for her handling of hurricanes that hit Texas and Florida, but has come under fire over the devastation in Puerto Rico.

"It is extremely important that the DHS Secretary stay above the partisan fray and not allow the position be a political pawn of the White House".
