UAE Stops Issuing Visas for North Korean Laborers

The Emirati state news agency, WAM notes that the USA ally also has ended issuing visa for North Korean nationals.

Tensions over North Korea's weapons programme have soared in recent months, with Pyongyang launching a flurry of missiles and conducting its sixth and most powerful nuclear test last month.

The fate of the thousands of North Korean laborers already in the UAE remains up in the air.

"Very happy to hear that", State Department spokesman Heather Nauert told reporters.

The UAE announced on Thursday that it will terminate the missions of North Korea's non-resident ambassador and its own non-resident envoy to the North Korean capital, Pyongyang and that it will stop issuing new visas and business licenses to North Koreans.

"There have never been workers from North Korea working on any World Cup construction sites", Qatar's Government Communications Office said in a statement, adding some companies had employed North Koreans prior to 2015.

The 2 nations say money earned by North Korean migrant workers is allowing Pyongyang to continue its nuclear and missile programs.

Kuwait in September significantly downgraded ties with North Korea, asking North Korean workers to leave and prohibiting Kuwait companies to deal with their North Korean counterparts.

There are up to 1,300 North Koreans working in the UAE.
