Vigil captures hope, love for lives lost to domestic violence

On Saturday the annual fundraiser for the Saguache Sheriff's Victim's Advocate program was held on 4th Street in Saguache to help Victims Advocate Ellen Cox and her staff create domestic violence awareness in the county and assist victims.

According to the Coalition Against Domestic Violence, on average 20 people are abused by an intimate partner every minute in the United States, equating to more than 10 million abuse victims annually.

Marshall praised the work of victims' advocates across the state, who work to provide information and support to those affected by domestic violence.

As leaders in our homes, communities and careers, it is important that we understand the lasting and long term impact that domestic violence, abuse and neglect has on those who have experienced it or are now experiencing it.

Although domestic violence and dating abuse are often hidden from friends and family, when a domestic abuse survivor decides to finally seek help, there are services available to help her/him escape and heal from the abuse.

This announcement coincides with National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. So, it is important that we know red-flag warning signs of abuse and what to do if we recognize that it is happening.

Marshall hopes that Alabamians will recognize those lives who were lost and damaged by domestic violence, celebrate and honor those who have survived, and show support for those who advocate for victims of such a frightful crime. "Victims need to know that they are not alone, that they need not be ashamed, and that they may be provided with justice".

"Unfortunately, domestic violence is still very prevalent", she said.

If you are in danger, call 911, a local hotline or a national hotline.
