Switzerland were narrowly beaten to top spot in their group in the final game and will be joined by Italy, Denmark, Croatia, Sweden, Northern Ireland, Greece and Republic of Ireland as the remaining Europeans are whittled down from eight to four.

According to FIFA's official website, "Following the Final Draw of the 2018 FIFA World Cup on December 1, 2017, sales phase 2 will comprise a random selection draw period from December 5, 2017, to January 31, 2018, and a further first-come, first-served period from March 13 to April 3, 2018". Sales phase 1 began on September 14 and lasts until October 12, when fans can apply for tickets. While Argentina had Messi, who was able to prevent his side's failure to qualify for the Russia World Cup, there were some shocking revelations made last night which saw some of the biggest footballing nations bowing out of the competition before it actually started.

A number of expectant countries saw their World Cup dreams come to an end this week as their final qualifying results ensured they fell short of even a playoff opportunity.
