Zverev brutalises racquet in loss to Del Potro

Fognini occupied Nadal for 63 minutes, nine minutes longer Nadal's second-round match.

"I think I didn't play well the first game of the match with my serve, but when I saw the stats on the TV, and I was winning more points returning than him, but I lost the set".

Rafael Nadal won his 14th consecutive match to reach the Shanghai Masters quarterfinals, beating Fabio Fognini of Italy 6-3, 6-1 on Thursday.

Zverev's fury at letting the match slip became apparent in the third as he massacred his racquet as the Argentine broke for a 3-2 lead in the decider.

Dimitrov, chasing a spot at the season-ending ATP Finals in London, beat American Sam Querrey 6-3, 7-6 (3) to set up a Chinese reunion with Nadal.

Federer will play Richard Gasquet in the quarterfinals.

Nadal saved both break points he faced in the round-of-16 match, in the fourth game of the second set.

Del Potro will John Isner of the USA or Viktor Troicki of Serbia in the last eight on Friday.

The chair umpire handed Zverev a code violation and a warning. I said to me, Okay, you're playing good.

German youngster Zverev is one of the rising stars on the tennis circuit after storming up the world rankings to number four at the age of 20.

The victor of that match may well meet Roger Federer in the semi-finals - a man whom Del Potro downed at the US Open.

"He has everything to be in the top positions in the future, but these things happen".
