Alonso completes over 100 laps in Toyota LMP1 test

The 36-year-old McLaren Formula One driver will drive the Toyota TS050 hybrid vehicle in the one-day rookie test at the Sakhir circuit this week.

On the first timed effort of the seventh of those stints, Alonso set what proved to be his best time of the day with a lap of 1:43.013s.

"We've done a bit more work with Fernando", he added. After getting familiar with the auto he went this afternoon to do some tyre testing, complementing what Mike [Conway] was doing on the other vehicle.

Alonso was not tasked with going for quick laptimes, so Wurz said that judging the Spaniard's performance based on the end of day time sheets was impossible. 'We did not do any low-fuel run and we did not do any qualifying runs - there was no trophy today to win, ' he said.

The pair will be joined by several other teams on-track during the five hour test, which will also see an LMP1 debut for recently crowned Formula V8 3.5 champion Pietro Fittipaldi.

Alonso is attempting to become only the second driver in history, after the late Graham Hill, to complete the Triple Crown - winning the Monaco GP, Indianapolis 500 and Le Mans 24 Hours. He'll take the wheel of a United Autosports entry, the team co-founded by McLaren executive director Zak Brown.

Vasselon refused on to comment on the chances of Alonso rejoining Toyota for its next scheduled test at Aragon at the start of next month. 'We have time now to think about the future'. 'At the moment it was just a fantastic opportunity, ' he said.

"Fernando is one of the best race drivers out there so, as you would expect, he did very well in the test". 'I don't know when, but endurance for sure is one of the goals for me in the future after F1'.
