Andhra Pradesh: 16 killed as boat capsizes in Krishna River

At least five people were killed and 11 others missing after a tourist boat carrying 38 passengers capsized in the Krishna near Ibrahimpatnam, Andhra Pradesh, on Sunday.

They said that the boat, run by Simple Water Sports, was ferrying 35-40 passengers, much more than its capacity of 20. Officials said 41 passengers, including 31 members of Ongole Wakers Club, were present in the boat when it overturned. They all reached Vijayawada in two buses this morning. they enjoyed the day at Bhavani island and were on the way to Pavitra Sangamam to witness the colourful evening Aarti to the river.

So far, 15 people have been rescued.

An official said, the boat was making a trip from Punnami Ghat, Bhavanipuram, to Pavitra Sangamam, Ferry village.

The NDRF said three teams of it are now performing operation.

According to PTI, the police said that over 17 others are feared dead, but their bodies are yet to be recovered.

Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has expressed shock over the accident and directed Director General Police Sambasiva Rao to rush to the scene and supervise rescue operations.

National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams and Krishna district authorities have launched a massive search and rescue operation to trace the missing people.
