Chelsea legend Didier Drogba to retire

The Ivory Coast superstar - who now plays for USL side Phoenix Rising - announced his decision to RMC Sport today, saying: "Ah, do you want a scoop?"

In an exclusive scoop to RMC's Team Duga podcast, world football legend Didier Drogba has revealed his plans to retire at the end of next season - the end of the 2018 USL season, after finishing his second season as player-part-owner for Phoenix Rising FC in Phoenix, Arizona. "There comes a time when you have to stop", said Drogba. I need to have some time for my other projects.

Drogba has been playing for Phoenix since the turn of the year, where he has scored 10 times in his 14 appearances. "Playing is good, but at 39, it slows me a bit".

In total he played 381 times for the Blues, scoring 164 times; Drogba also won the Premier League on four occasions, the FA Cup four times and netted the winning penalty when Chelsea beat Bayern Munich to win the UEFA Champions League.

The four-time Premier League champion scored nine goals in his first season with Phoenix Rising as they finished fifth in the Western Conference.

Apart from his trophy-laden spell at Chelsea, Drogba also has Turkish Super Lig, Super Cup and Turkish Cup honours to his name with Galatasaray.

He left Chelsea in the summer of 2015 to move to America and spent two seasons with Montreal Impact in the MLS.
