EA to acquire Titanfall developer Respawn

EA has announced that is plans to acquire Titanfall developer Respawn Entertainment.

Titanfall 2 is one of the most critically-acclaimed first-person shooters in recent years, though its sales suffered as a result of its release coinciding with Battlefield 1. There are additional incentives in the deal that could be realized through performance milestones, capped at $140 million, and the deal is expected to close around the end of the year.

Respawn was founded in 2010 by Zampella and Jason West, also the co-founders of Call of Duty studio Infinity Ward, and has released two games thus far, both of them Titanfall. "[An acquisition] has come up from time to time. We see the need for bigger resources to make bigger games".

EA CEO Andrew Wilson said that the Titanfall franchise embodies the publisher's goal of delivering "extraordinary and innovative new experiences", and that "with the Respawn team joining EA, we have exciting plans to accomplish even more awesome things in the future". EA will provide us with more resources, access to new technologies, and expertise that we can tap into to that will help us make better games, and Respawn will retain the same creative freedom and culture we've always had.

Patrick Soderlund, Executive Vice President at EA, echoed his views as well, saying that the company wants the best games and a good relationship.

EA said Respawn is working on "a new title in the Titanfall franchise, a game set in the Star Wars universe and a VR gaming experience". And, it seems as if most major EA subsidiaries are going to be responsible for something Star Wars-related. "It doesn't change the future of Titanfall".

Early past year, EA announced that it had contracted Respawn to make a Star Wars action game, in addition to the Battlefront series and what was then planned as a Star Wars action-adventure from Visceral, which has since been cancelled.

Are you guys excited to see another Titanfall game?
