"When they kill men of the resistance, and especially from Islamic Jihad, we have no other choice but to punish the occupier, and continue to strengthen the buildup of forces from a conflict", al-Batash reportedly said.

Qa'adan's family told Quds Press that the occupation forces stormed the leader's house at 01:30 and arrested him, despite his poor health.

"We are aware of the plot being waged by Palestinian Islamic Jihad against Israel". He was due to undergo two surgeries as a result of a health condition, the family noted.

Mourners carry the coffin of Palestinian Islamic Jihad Movement terrorist Arafat Abu Morshed during the funeral at the Bureij refugee camp, in central Gaza of Palestinians killed in an Israeli operation to blow up a tunnel stretching from the Gaza Strip into Israel, on October 31, 2017.

According to Amos Yadlin, head of the Institute for National Security Studies think tank, "the messages and warnings that Israel has been sending to Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) over the last couple of days are not incidental, but actually indicate concrete intel according to which PIJ plans to respond to the destruction of his terror tunnel into Israel", Yadlin wrote on Twitter.

The arrest came a day after Islamic Jihad called Israeli threats against its leadership "a declaration of war, which we will confront".

Israel has deployed several missile defence system batteries following the escalation of tensions with militant Palestinian fighters in the Gaza Strip, according to local media.

"(Islamic Jihad) is playing with fire at the expense of the residents of the Gaza Strip, at the expense of the Palestinian reconciliation agreements and the entire region", Mordechai said.

The group said it would not back down on its "right" to retaliate against Israel for the tunnel explosion, which led to the deaths of 12 of its members, including two commanders, as well as two members of Hamas's military wing.
