J&K: One terrorist killed by security forces in Kulgam encounter

An Army jawan and a militant were today killed in an encounter in Kulgam district of Jammu and Kashmir even as security forces were engaged in a counter insurgency operation in Pulwama district.

A police spokesman said security forces launched a cordon and search operation in Nowbug-Kund village of Kulgam on Tuesday morning after receiving specific information about the presence of militants in the area.

Elsewhere, a gunfight is underway between militants and security forces in Lam area of neighbouring Pulwama district.

Despite restrictions and heavy deployment of the men in uniform, thousands of people, today, attended the funeral prayers of two youth at Brath Kalan and Pattan areas of Baramulla district.

The injured soldier and policeman were shifted to a hospital.

This comes a day after two unidentified militants were gunned down by security forces in Handwara. The operation is going on.

Police said as the security forces tightened the cordon around the village, they were fired at by the militants, triggering the fighting.

Officials said the authorities have directed all cellular companies to suspend mobile internet services in entire south Kashmir to prevent spread of any rumour on social media. The services were shut soon after a gunfight erupted in Tral and Kulgam areas.
