Ms. Osamor was reacting to the resignation of worldwide development secretary Priti Patel over undeclared meetings with Israeli officials, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, while on holiday in Israel in August and later in London.

"It will be best for the Government and Prime Minister if Patel's replacement, if not actually a Leave supporter, at least shares her enthusiasm for the possibilities that Brexit offers to Britain".

Priti Patel had quit on Wednesday after lacking "transparency" due to unauthorized meetings with Israeli officers.

Mordaunt, 44, campaigned to leave the European Union in the 2016 referendum.

Ms Mordaunt, a Navy reservist, has had a long political career but a relatively short time in Parliament - only elected in 2010 and holding a handful of junior roles in the work and pensions, defence and communities departments.

The announcement marks the second reshuffle in a week for Theresa May.

There had been concerns among commenters that whoever replaced Ms Patel - who had also backed Brexit - might upset the balance of support within the Cabinet.

Ms Mordaunt made no comment on her appointment as she left Downing Street, but opposition parties warned the former minister for the disabled that she would have her work cut out.

She backed fellow Brexiteer Andrea Leadsom to be Tory leader after Cameron resigned.

"Theresa May must get control of her chaotic cabinet and decaying government or step aside for Labour, " Kate Osamor, a shadow minister for the opposition Labour party, said in a statement.

"Unlike Priti Patel, who too often used the department to prop up her personal networks and leadership ambitions, Mordaunt must also quickly commit to the central cause of the department: to help the world's poorest".

As global development secretary, she will be in charge of the U.K.'s 13 billion British pounds ($17.09 billion) foreign aid budget, according to BBC.
