Panthers WR Curtis Samuel suffers ligament damage in ankle

He had only 10 catches for 70 yards before Monday night.

Samuel left Monday night's game against the Dolphins early in the third quarter after his foot turned awkwardly under the weight of Miami safety Reshad Jones in the end zone.

Samuel caught a season-high five passes prior to being injured.

He is scheduled to have surgery on the injured ankle and eventually be placed on injured reserve. Cam Newton said the injury is "real bad" while Rivera said he's "not optimistic" about his status. He's doing a better job on releases - just all the little things on route running.

Offensive coordinator Mike Shula said Samuel will be replaced by committee, referring to Kaelin Clay, Russell Sheppard and even running back Christian McCaffrey.

The Panthers have only four other receivers on their active roster - Devin Funchess, Russell Shepard, Kaelin Clay and Brenton Bersin - but Damiere Boyd is eligible to come off injured reserve for the team's game against the Saints on December 3. Is there anybody as fast as him?

Also, speedy receiver Damiere Byrd (broken arm) is set to come off injured reserve after the Jets game.

The rookie was providing a nice compliment with his speed opposite Devin Funchess and this offense was clicking.

"One of the best things that happened after Curtis [went out] was we didn't feel we missed a beat, " Shula said.
