Phillies involved in 'preliminary communication' to acquire Marlins outfielder Giancarlo Stanton

It's nearly certain that the Miami Marlins will trade star outfielder Giancarlo Stanton this winter. "They're definitely in play", said the major-league source about the Red Sox, according to the newspaper.

"I would not get specific on any player but try to do our due diligence in every regard", said Dombrowski. San Francisco also has the financial capital to take on the remainder of Stanton's 13-year, $325 million contract.

Historically, Dombrowski likes to think big, and the Marlins have conducted business with him in the past, most notably the 2007 blockbuster in which they traded Miguel Cabrera to Detroit.

Recently, MLB.com reported that the Red Sox were among a group of four teams known to be interested in a trade for Stanton.

Miami Marlins president of baseball operations Michael Hill says Don Mattingly will be back as manager next season. Other teams could be in the mix as well, or enter the fray later.

Stanton led the majors with 59 home runs and 132 RBIs during 2017 while the Red Sox ranked last in the American League with 168 home runs. In eight seasons, he has already hit 267 home runs. The Marlins are in fire sale mode as their new ownership wants to slash payroll.

The Red Sox, meanwhile, are prepared to increase payroll, even to the point of exceeding the luxury tax threshold.

There's also the matter of what young players the Red Sox would part with to make a deal and beat out the other suitors.
