Shawn Mendes wins best artist at MTV Europe Music Awards

The MTV Europe Music Awards air tonight at the SSE Arena in Wembley, London.

Mendes, the 19-year-old Canadian star, also won the best-song trophy for "There's Nothing Holdin' Me Back", to the delight of fans standing in a polite onstage mosh-pit at the city's SSE Arena.

Instead, Eminem kicked off the ceremony with a performance of his new single, "Walk On Water", while Stormzy performed "Big For Your Boots" from a police vehicle.

Cuban-American singer Camila Cabello was honoured with the best pop prize, while Coldplay snatched the best rock award.

Taylor Swift, who was expected to be one of the big winners of the night with six nominations, failed to win any awards.

Eminem was also named best hip-hop artist, and proclaimed surprise. Other multiple nominees include Sheeran, Sam Mendes and Kendrick Lamar. Mendes had been expected to fare well, going into the EMAs with five nominations, and was a triple victor, taking the "biggest fans" accolade in addition to best song and artist.

Irish band U2 collected MTV's "Global Icon" gong, previously awarded to Queen, Whitney Houston and Eminem.

"For over four decades and counting, they've entertained, influenced, and inspired fans around the globe", he added. U2, recipients of the global icon award on the night, performed "Get Out of Your Own Way" from Trafalgar Square. Next year's ceremony will be held in Bilbao, Spain.

After Camilla exited the stage following her scintillating performance, visibly impressed host Rita Ora gushed to the audience: 'Shout to Camilla bringing the sexiness to the EMAs!'
