Stubble burning: This formula could have saved Delhi its smog menace

Stubble burning: This formula could have saved Delhi its smog menace

Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said he would meet his Haryana counterpart in Chandigarh on Wednesday to discuss rising air pollution levels in the national capital as the latter was too "busy" to meet him in Delhi. Khattar said he was in Delhi for two days, and Kejriwal could meet him at any time, but reminded the Delhi CM that "while Punjab has not spent even a paisa out its allocation of Rs 97.58 crore, Haryana has used Rs 39 crore of the allocation of Rs 45 crore released for crop residue management". Would be grateful if u cud spare sometime to meet me. "I look forward to meeting him in Chandigarh", Mr Kejriwal tweeted.

The development comes after Khattar wrote back to Kejriwal and said he was "likely" to be in Delhi on November 13 and 14.

Delhi, has been suffering due to the toxic smog caused by dust from construction, vehicle exhaust and most of all illegal crop burning in the neighbouring states of Punjab and Haryana.

In a letter to Kejriwal, Khattar said some 40,000 families cultivate around 40,000 hectares in Delhi. Earlier, Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh had sought Prime Minister Narendra Modi's intervention on the issue.

"We have taken all possible steps in Haryana".

Accusing the Delhi CM of playing politics for vote-bank, he said, "I will be in Delhi on Monday and Tuesday. Unfortunately your letter contains no hint of such a mindset", Khattar wrote in his reply to Kejriwal's invitation for talks.

He added that no single person, organisation or government could improve the quality of air. Such collective action problems require everyone to do their bit.... "I am coming to Chandigarh on Wednesday to meet Haryana CM".

He cited "publicly available satellite imagery data" and said they showed substantial reduction in stubble burning cases and fires from 2014 onwards in Haryana. After arriving in Delhi, Khattar told reporters: "I am in Delhi, where is the meeting".
