Tiger Woods shoots 3-under 69 in return at Hero World Challenge

Tiger Woods did not take long to unleash his patented fist pump on his long-awaited return to competition at the Hero World Challenge in the Bahamas.

Woods, 41, is ranked 1,199th in the world as he is making just his 20th worldwide start since the first of his four back surgeries in 2014.

Woods also made a couple of birdies to go with that eagle through his front nine, and Tiger fans will hope for more of the same when he tees off alongside Justin Thomas on Thursday.

"I didn't know what I could do", Woods told Golf Channel after his round.

In other words, it has been a long time since Tiger won.

There was even a vintage fist pump after a 20ft putt for par dropped on the fourth hole.

Woods reached 4 under and was one off the lead after back-to-back birdies at Nos. Last year, he returned to this same tournament at Albany Golf Club after a 15-month layoff and finished 15th out of 17 players. I had a lot of adrenaline going. That moved him back to 2 under, and he made two putts inside 10 feet at the next two for par to stay 2 under.

Plagued by back problems that have resulted in four surgeries, the most recent in April, as well as turmoil in his private life, Woods - victor of 14 major titles - has plummeted from his longtime perch as world No. 1 to No. 1,199 in the rankings (even if he finishes last at this week's limited-field event, he's guaranteed to rise in the rankings).
