Trump, Putin agree 'no military solution' in Syria

The U.S. and Russian presidents are set to meet Friday at an global economic summit in Vietnam, a Kremlin aide confirmed Thursday.

Trump and Putin also confirmed their support for de-escalation zones in Syria, including one in the southwest that the presidents agreed to at a meeting in July in Germany.

Although a meeting between Trump and Putin was widely expected at the APEC summit, the Kremlin statement did not confirm details of their talk.

They also called on United Nations members to increase humanitarian aid contributions for Syria.

Earlier, Ushakov said that at the meeting, Putin and Trump could discuss the situation in Syria and the Korean Peninsula, as well as bilateral relations that earlier "failed, in a critical state".

"The presidents confirmed their determination to defeat ISIS in Syria", the Kremlin said, adding that the leaders "agreed to maintain open military channels of communication" between USA and Russian forces.

Moscow and Washington agree there is no military solution to the Syrian conflict, according to the text of the joint statement published on the Kremlin's website.

The Kremlin quickly promoted the agreement as the White House stayed silent.

Trump and Putin may not be having a formal meeting while they're in Vietnam for an economic summit, but they appear to be chumming it up nonetheless. Later, Trump and Putin chatted together as a group of leaders headed toward the site of a "family photo" of APEC leaders.

Putin says "in response to our alleged interference in their elections, they want to create problems during the election of the president of Russian Federation". Putin denied interfering in the campaign.

After Da Nang, Trump prepared to head north to Hanoi to meet with Vietnamese leaders on Saturday night and Sunday morning.
