UC Browser app vanishes from Play Store following privacy concerns

Alibaba-owned UC Browser has suddenly disappeared from the Google Play Store.

Dear Partner, We hereby emphasis again that UC Union prohibits any and all misleading/malicious advertising method (s) to procure new users when promoting UC Browser campaigns, such as by using slogan inconsistent with the Product functions, or by using inductive slogan. The app has vanished just days after it claimed crossing 500 million downloads on Google Play store.

Although UC Browser isn't available for download, UC Browser Mini is still up on the Play Store.

The browser's dissappearnce from the Google Play Store was first reported by some users on Reddit India. Google is taking a strict stance on apps using dubious tricks to increase install base or spread ad malware to steal user information.

Reports began swirling in August that claimed UC Browser has a rather nasty habit of stealing sensitive user data which it then sends back to remote servers in China without the user's consent.

While Chrome has since reinstated some of its dominance, back in June, UC Browser became India's favourite mobile browser and at one point grasped over 50 percent market share. "There are complaints that even if an user has uninstalled it or cleaned browsing data, the browser retains control of DNS of user's device", the officer who did not wish to be named had told PTI. The browser is the go-to app for low-end Android phones.

Do you think this is a step in the right direction by Google to pull down UC Browser Down from its Play Store?

UCWeb has also claimed that Indian users make up 100 million of its total monthly active users from around the world, with the latter figure reportedly reaching 420 million, per reports from 2016. The report also ranked the UC Browser as the sixth most-downloaded application on Android platform in India.
