Watch Jimmy Fallon's Tearful Tribute to His Late Mother Gloria

On Monday evening, Jimmy Fallon made an emotional return to The Tonight Show following a week-long hiatus from his late-night slot after his mum Gloria's passing, and Taylor Swift was there to make the hard time a little sweeter with a moving rendition of "New Year's Day".

Fallon has hosted "The Tonight Show" since 2013, often shouting out his Upstate New York roots, from cheering on Syracuse basketball to referencing the region in skits.

Addressing the news upfront, the host explained all of last week's tapings had been canceled so he could be with family following the devastating loss.

During his tribute, Fallon recalled how his mother would squeeze his hand three times to signify "I love you". "Look what you made me do..."

Following the news of Gloria Fallon's death, a family spokesperson issued the following statement, "Jimmy Fallon's mother, Gloria, died peacefully on Saturday". She was 68 and had been battling an unspecified illness.

"She was not scheduled to do our show today", he wrote on Twitter.

Fallon teased the appearance on his Instagram earlier Monday, saying, "I wanted to make sure we have a very very special, big musical performance and we got one!"

Gloria Fallon and her husband Jim lived in Brooklyn, where Jimmy and his sister, also named Gloria, were born.

"Tonight Show" airs weeknights at 11:35 p.m. EST on NBC.

The late night talk show had been in reruns since November 3 when Jimmy had canceled that night's taping to tend to his mother in the hospital. Pictured: Fallon attends the 2011 Can-Do Awards Dinner at Pier Sixty at Chelsea Piers on April. 7, 2011 in New York City.
