Watch the first trailer for Steven Spielberg's new film The Post

At the time, the Post's Katherine Graham (Streep) was still finding her footing as the country's first female newspaper publisher, and Ben Bradlee (Hanks), the paper's volatile, driven editor, was trying to enhance the stature of the struggling, local paper. With the paper's hard-driving editor Ben Bradlee (two-time Oscar-winner Tom Hanks), Graham led an unprecedented battle between government and journalists to expose the truth behind a cover-up which spanned four US presidents.

The first official trailer has been shared for the highly anticipated new film from Academy Award winning director Steven Spielberg. Throw in names like Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks, and Meryl Streep, all of whom have a combined nine Oscars between them, and you have an intense spotlight on a project all its own.

The film is scheduled to hit the theatre during Christmas.

The Post focuses on the newspaper's efforts to expose evidence of a massive government cover-up spanning three decades and four presidents, including lies about the scale of the Vietnam War.

The film's trailer was released on Wednesday and it looks like a film that will be high on performances. Despite the company legacy being at stake, The Washington Post makes the tough call to publish. The Post, written by Liz Hannah and Josh Singer, releases on December 22 in select theaters and has a wide release on January 12, 2018.

Hanks and Streep lead an all-star cast that also includes Sarah Paulson, Bradley Whitford, Alison Brie, Bob Odenkirk, Carrie Coon, Bruce Greenwood and Jesse Plemons.

This film couldn't be more timely with the Donald Trump administration at odds with the news media.

Spielberg, Hanks and Streep have won a combined eight Academy Awards.
