Alabama's Jeremy Pruitt set to take Tennessee gig

According to multiple reports, the Volunteers are expected to hire Alabama defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt as its new head coach.

It appears as though Tennessee is focusing in on a trio of SEC defensive coordinators: Alabama's Jeremy Pruitt, Georgia's Mel Tucker and Auburn's Kevin Steele.

Low said the Volunteers and Pruitt were in the process of finalizing a deal while Hyams revealed that a potential snag in the negotiations is the potential availability of Pruitt coaching in the College Football Playoff.

He was Georgia's defensive coordinator the next two seasons before taking over for Kirby Smart as Alabama's defensive coordinator in 2016. He was defensive coordinator at Florida State in 2013 when the Seminoles won a national championship. Sports CFB insider Pete Thamel, Pruitt has emerged as the front runner for the job.

Not surprisingly, Pruitt took what was already an elite Alabama defense under Smart and helped it maintain its standing.

Saban is the best coach in college football, and even he relies on the deepest pool of assistant coaches in the country.

Currie fired former UT head coach Butch Jones 25 days ago, and nothing went right. Word is new athletic director Phillip Fulmer is pushing for a disciplinarian and someone who can bring a more hard-nosed, physical style to the program.

Pruitt has been excellent at every one of his college coaching stops, and he has years of experience recruiting in the Southeast region.
