Creek Fire Burns 1000 Acres in Sylmar Area; Evacuation Orders in Place

"Our courageous men and women of the Los Angeles County Fire Department are working tirelessly in coordination with other first responders to protect lives and property and stop the forward progress of the devastating fires", said Supervisor Barger.

A brush fire is burning in the hillsides near Hansen Dam in the Sylmar area early Tuesday morning. "If you are impacted by this fire and asked to evacuate, I urge you to please comply for your safety and the safety of our first responders". The Angeles NF is in unified command with LA County Fire Department and LA City Fire Department.

Several evacuation centers have been set up including the Sylmar Recreation Center at 13109 Borden Ave., the Branford Recreation Center at 13306 Branford Arleta and Pierce College in Woodland Hills.

It was unclear if any structures have burned as a result of the fire, Cabrera said.

The emergency declaration allows for state firefighting assistance to local governments and suspends rules that might hinder recovery efforts after the fires are put out.

Just after 10:15 a.m., Caltrans also issued a closure for Route 33 north of Ventura near Canada Large Road due to the Thomas Fire which as of Tuesday morning had consumed about 31,000 acres.
