Eli Manning to replace Geno Smith as Giants' starter

Owners don't usually get involved in personnel decisions, but the situation with the Giants this year is highly unusual: Coach Ben McAdoo benched Manning, a franchise icon, last week, only to get fired this week.

Less than a week after seeing his streak of 210 consecutive starts come to an end, New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning will be back in his familiar starting role again on Sunday against the Dallas Cowboys, a team source confirmed Tuesday.

McAdoo and other members of his coaching staff had chose to give Smith and third string quarterback Davis Webb a chance to showcase their talents over the rest of the season, with doubts over how long 14-year veteran Manning would continue to play.

Sales of Manning's jersey surged more than 70 per cent after his benching last week, compared with sales over the previous seven days, according to data from sports retailer Fanatics, which runs the National Football League's official online shop.

Shortly after Spagnuolo was named interim coach, Manning went to him and asked for his job back for the final four games of the regular season.

Smith and the Giants lost in Oakland, 24-17.
