Francis Ngannou opens as betting favourite against Stipe Miocic

Francis Ngannou opens as betting favourite against Stipe Miocic

The last time it happened was on December 27, 2008, at UFC 92, where 205-pound champion Forrest Griffin lost the title to Rashad Evans via TKO, while interim heavyweight champion Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira was stopped for the first time in his career by Frank Mir. With the win, Ngannou has earned a shot at the UFC heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic and the two are reportedly being targeted to fight at UFC 220 in January. With additional reports confirming the news, it appears to be a done deal.

UFC 220 now features one other title fight, a light heavyweight championship showdown between Daniel Cormier and fast-rising contender Volkan Oezdemir.

With Stipe Miocic (17-2) looking at a record setting third straight title defense, there's no question UFC 220 will be big.

After dos Santos fell to the canvas, Miocic swarmed the former champion and threw more than a dozen left-handed punches through the guard, and when those strikes went unanswered, referee Herb Dean called a stop to the bout. Prior to that, he finished off challenger Alistair Overeem at UFC 206 past year. Overall, he's 11-2 in the UFC.

And Ngannou - who only took up the sport of MMA four years ago - is the bookies' favourite.

Now he'll face his toughest test against the division's current champion, with Miocic having been in unstoppable form over the past few years during a five-fight winning streak that's seen him run through the likes of Junior dos Santos, Overeem, Fabricio Werdum, Andrei Arlovski and Mark Hunt - all of whom he finished by strikes.

20 at TD Garden in Boston and airs on pay-per-view following prelims on FS1 and UFC Fight Pass.
