Hornets coach Clifford out indefinitely with 'health issue'

Clifford missed Monday's win over the Magic with an unspecified illness and Silas filled in.

There is no timetable to Clifford's return, nor will the Hornets have additional comments out of respect for his privacy, the team's statement said.

"This head coaching stuff isn't easy".

Charlotte Hornets head coach Steve Clifford will step away from the team for the immediate future to address his health, the team announced Wednesday in a release. We're all hoping that the 56-year-old Clifford has a quick recovery.

This is a great opportunity for Silas, who may be in line for a head coaching job soon, but it obviously comes under unfortunate circumstances.

Clifford has battled heart problems in the past, but a person familiar with the situation told The Associated Press the issue was not a heart-related.

Silas will continue to coach the team with Clifford out. That coaching resume includes stints under his father Paul with the Hornets (2000-2003, 2010-2013) and Cleveland Cavaliers (2003-2005), as well as time as an assistant with the Golden State Warriors (2006-2010).
