Learn more about Metal Gear Survive's single-player campaign

To me, they managed to pull it off a little bit by revealing single-player gameplay commentary of Metal Gear Survive on YouTube earlier today, showing off a genuinely interesting survival base-building game that just tangentially happens to align within the Metal Gear franchise. It's the first Metal Gear game after the departure of Hideo Kojima from Konami. The protagonist is shown kicking around in clouds of poisonous mist at one point, and is required to craft a rebreather in order to stay alive. The premise of the game is silly, as it takes place in an alternate universe where a wormhole opened up at the end of "Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes", which brought a bunch of anonymous soldiers to another dimension full of zombies. Players can use these resources to craft items, like new weapons.

Metal Gear Survive is set to launch on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC via Steam on February 20th, 2018. You can check out the single-player footage and details, below. In fact, some strong enemies and hordes of zombie-like "wanderers" can only be tackled with up to three other friends.

As for single-player gameplay, there looks to be a strong influence from tower defense games going on.

The game's beta will run from the 18th of January to the 21st of January 2018 for both consoles and will provide players with the opportunity to jump into co-op mode.

More information on the title is available on the company's official website.

Metal Gear Survive looks pretty rough compared to past games in the series, but at least it appears to have a fair amount of depth.

A Metal Gear Survive beta will be offered up in January, Konami has recently advised.
