Marshall holds Colorado State 31-28 in New Mexico Bowl

Colorado State dropped the Gildan New Mexico Bowl 31-28 to the Marshall Thundering Herd on Saturday afternoon, on a day in which both teams had trouble getting into gear. In 2017, Marshall's offense is led by quarterback Chase Litton, who threw for 2,853 yards, 23 touchdowns and 12 interceptions this season. His touchdown total is tied for second-best nationally among tight ends. The Rams have now finished 7-6 in each of the past three seasons, which includes losing four of their final five games in 2017.

Marshall could've sealed the game when the Herd forced and recovered a fumble in the shadow of Colorado State's goalposts. Wide receiver Michael Gallup is Colorado State's deep threat and has 1,345 receiving yards this season. "There were a number of them that he was open, and protection was solid". While Marshall found its stride, however, Colorado State never looked in sync, getting outgained on offense by a 501-390 margin.

Colorado State's defense made outgoing defensive coordinator Marty English proud at times, but the overall performance was nothing short of bad.

What turned out to be the decisive play: this fourth-down stop by Marshall with 1:46 to play, where Colorado State quarterback Nick Stevens caught his own batted pass, tried to run for a first down and got wrapped up for a loss of 1 yard.

"This hurts but we'll regroup and get ready for next year", Bobo said.

The first of those six-straight bowl wins was under previous head coach Mark Snyder at the 2009 Little Caesars Bowl, but Holliday has overseen each of the last five postseason appearances.

MARSHALL: Marshall's defense also kept constant pressure on Colorado State's high-octane offense preventing the Rams from threatening with an air attack most of the game.

It was all for naught, however, because Stevens missed Gallup on a downfield throw three plays later and then the Rams turned the ball over on downs. But at the same time, he's only won seven games each season and lost all his bowl games so 2018 may be key season for him. With two evenly matched teams, the New Mexico Bowl will be an exciting matchup to watch.
