Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton are two entirely different people, but that hasn't stopped the internet from pitting them against each other since Markle and Prince Harry announced their engagement in November.

Matt Smith plays the husband of Claire Foy's Queen Elizabeth II in Netflix's "The Crown", which streams Season 2 this Friday, Dec. 8.

"You realise the fact that Elizabeth forbade her sister from marrying a divorced man; it goes to show how time has changed and how they've had to evolve", she said, referring to the fact that Markle is a divorcee and yet has been accepted by Her Majesty as Prince Harry's would-be wife.

'And they really have.

At a talk hosted by Vanity Fair, the star of the Netflix drama said he felt "sorry" for the soon-to-be royal.

"This would not have been conceivable, this would not have happened 50 years ago", reckoned Foy. "It's such a transition in her life, and it's such a huge thing to take on". It is exciting, though, not just that she's marrying a prince, but also - more importantly - that she's marrying the man she loves.

The actress, who plays the Queen in the £100m series, explained the engagement between Harry, 35, and Meghan, 36, marked a significant step forward for the royal family, comparing it to the relationship between Princess Margaret and Group Captain Peter Townsend. Apparently, there's actually no such thing has having a best man at a royal wedding - but William broke protocol to honor his sibling when he Wednesday Kate Middleton.

The 35-year-old The Crown actor admits it is "exciting" the former Suits actress has got engaged but reckons it will be quite hard to adjust to her new life as a member of the royal family.
